I am in 8th grade and I ran a mile pr of 5:24 last week. A few days ago we did a time trial at practice and I only managed a 5:47. Why does this happen? My teammates who are only a few seconds faster than me finished we ahead and close to their prs. This also happens regularly in workouts. And it's not because I'm not trying, I'm usually on the ground gasping for air after hard workouts. The only differences for the time trial vs the race I can think of were I didn't eat anything within a couple hours before and I wore normal running shoes instead of spikes, but that doesn't seem to add up to 24 seconds. I was on pace through half way but then died. I'm not sure if this means anything but I'm about 9 inches shorter than my team mates. Thanks.
