After reviewing the video ....that was legendary, putting the most notable runners of the era in one race..downplaying the world record holder until he breaks away from the field. I haven't looked at all results of spring marathon ever, but it Khalid K's dominance in what would seemly be a pressure cooker...is unprecedented.

Khannouchi going over Tergat and Haile in a world record was a helluva race. Personally, I'm a fan of Kipchoge's 2:03:05 in London last year.

I'd add Lopes running the mind blowing 2:07:11 at Rotterdam in 1985 after winning his 5th world cross title.

Lopes won World Cross 3 times, not 5. But I agree with you on the 2:07:11 - at the time it was a huge 54 second lowering of the WR.

You guys are crazy. Paula's 2:15 is easily the best. No one's even come close to that time yet the men's world record has been broken multiple times since then. Head to head wins are so-so, every race has a winner. Not every race has an untouchable WR.

I actually guessed KK. He's always been suspect in terms of doping to me tho.

It is going to be another 50-150 years before we see another 2:15 women. Possibly HUNDREDS of years, it's crazy how much slower the current fields are.

Oh no! According to McMillan, Paula Radcliffe's record is equivalent to a 1:04:21 half-marathon. Today, a woman ran 1:04:52 with horrible pacing. If the record is broken in the next couple of years, I would not be surprised at all.

Yeah but those recent ones, won by Kenyans, haven't resulted in WRs the way three of the races listed did. The other two (Duel in the sun and Meb) were just better downright races for how momentous they were and how they played out tactically. To me best marathon of all time was either Wanjiru in Beijing or him beating Kebede in Boston, but as someone noted above, they're not spring..
