Since graduating college, I've run 7 half marathons and two marathons. In both of the marathons I drank Gatorade and water during the race, and I got side stitches both times. In 2 of the half-marathons I also drank, and got side stitches. In the other 5 half-marathons I didn't drink, and I remained side stitch free. Now, I may not be the sharpest tack in the box, but I know a trend when I see one. When I drink, I get side stitches.
The problem is that I'm running the Boston marathon this weekend. On the one hand, I'm afraid to take in liquids, because a knife-in-the-ribs side stitch will kill my ability to run marathon pace. On the other hand, I'm afraid to abstain from liquids even if the weather is cool, because over the course of 26 miles I'm sure that dehydration and low glucose could equally screw up my race plan.
Any thoughts or advice? I've tried taking gatorade on training runs and I can drink fine in that context, but a training run is a lot different than a race. Would it be a good idea to limit my drinking to the earlier stages of the race, on the theory that my aerobic distress is less early on and thus my digstive system will process the liquid better? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
