I understand the pushback against excessive programming and organization for kids, but I think the above goes a bit far in the other direction. We have no idea what the kid's interests and preferences are going to be.
I wouldn't push a kid of any age to do competitive sports if they didn't want to, but if a kid wants to join a competitive team, I'm not going to tell them that they can't.
And playing competitive sports does not preclude one from also doing any of the other activities you mention. As an 8-year-old, if I spent 2 hours of my evening at basketball practice, I'd still go out and play with the neighborhood kids as soon as I got home.
