Yeah i can relate when you mean pricey for races. I try do more 5ks now they're cheaper and I'm not spending my entire Sunday zombified and lethargic trying to recover. 5ks are quick and can recovery rapidly from them. I used to hate 5ks, now I'm starting to feel differently about it, and having 3 kids and a young family i can relate to costs. 20 bucks for a local 5k is more economical than a 80+ dollar half marathon plus travel, time, longer recovery, ect.
I try to be around as much as I can. I work and still go to school to finish my degree. 9.9/10 my runs are less than 60 minutes. Only during my long run exceeds that time frame. Usually i leave very early and come back home with donuts! So the kids love it Sundays anyways ha.
I like the suggestions others have posted for creative ways to get additional miles in. My particular job doesn't really allow for a lunch run, so that's pretty much out for me everything else could work.
