Challenged by Olympic bronze medallist Sam Kendricks who put up a video of himself clearing 18 feet five times in the span of 30 minutes, Duplantis below clears 18 feet 10 times (out of 11 tries) in the span of 28 minutes.

Possibly the greatest feat in high school gymnastics history. I don't understand why pole vault is part of track and field. It's clearly a gymnastic event. The greatest feat in high school track and field history is Alan Webbs 3:53 dog.

-What did Mondo win?
He looked to have pretty easy clearance on several of those. Hard to not think he'll put the record near 19 feet this outdoor season.
And he's only a junior?

It's not gymnastics because the winner isn't determined by a made-up score. The fact that PV has an actual objective method for determining places makes it a better fit for track and field.

Pole vault is the best combination of the strength, speed and explosiveness in track and field.
Running the mile is just running slower than max for an arbitrary distance.
This would be kind of a cool field idea.
Dueling pole vaults. Most successful clears over X height in say 3 minute time frame.

Could be fun to watch, but I feel like it would create a serious safety issue to have people pole vaulting in a situation where they're being rushed. If you know that you don't have enough speed on the runway or that your steps are off, I don't want to incentivize you to try to force the jump anyway.

I wonder how many high school athletes 18 and under have been within 5% of a WR?
Probably a couple Americans and more than a few Kenyans.
Seems like 5.85 m in pole vault for High school is about where the record should be, it is just that as a new event it has taken some time for the right talent to come along.

Jim Ryun. He ran 3:55.3 was when the WR was 3:53.6. That put him within 1% of the WR.

Yup. Within 0%. Unlikely that within 1% or a WR will ever happen for a High Schooler.
I came in last in '83 county high school xc meet. If only if letsrun would have been around back then I would have known about running on "Pure Hate" and could have "Expected Great Things". What records would have fallen?

What is this new event you speak of? The PV has been around HS for easily 70 years. The Boy's record was 18'1.25" in 1981. That is close to what Duplantis has done this year and that was 36 years ago.
