In video games like Assassin's creed, legend of zelda, and GTA, I would never 'walk' to an objective. Such a waste of time. I'd hold x (or a or whatever run button) and jog/run over.
Got me thinking. Why shouldn't I jog to class? Jog around the super-market for my groceries? Jog to my car in the morning? If I'm willing to endure the mild discomfort for the sake of saving time, why is jogging socially unacceptable?
I jog everywhere - to the supermarket, in the mall and around town. No one has arrested me.

Yes but you are a social pariah and nobody likes you here.
Just like a lot of other things in life, people don't want you to look so much better at them. Your average fat POS can't even jog for 5 mins.

5 minutes? More like 5 seconds for the average American.
I often run from my car to a shop or wherever I'm heading. Everybody thinks I'm in a hurry. But I just love to run.
Sweat, daily wear shoe choice, fatigue, timing of meals, alcohol consumption, minor aches and pains.
Of course, I'm old so those reasons are more applicable to me than a student, and when I was a teen, I sprinted to my friends' houses all of the time. Still, many of them apply to most folks.
I stopped giving a s**t about what people think of me. I run home from the bars, I stop at the grocery store towards the ends of my runs to pick up stuff, I jog to go pick up my car at the mechanic.
My auto mechanic routine.
I drive to office early and drop off my work clothes and a towel.
I drive to mechanic and drop off car.
I run to the office (4.2 miles), change clothes, and go to work.
I receive a call from mechanic around 12 noon telling me they found something wrong that costs additional $500 to fix. I tell them 'maybe we'll fix that next time.'
After work, I change clothes and run (4.2 again) back to the mechanic.
I pick up car, drive home.
The whole routine makes dropping off the car at mechanic less painful.

I used to do a similar routine for service on my cars, but then I found a good mechanic 2 blocks from my work.

Those don't count because you're drunk coming home from the bar, you're already in your running clothes when going to the grocery store, and there's no other convenient way to drop a car off at a mechanic. Come back when you run to a lunch meeting with your coworkers, run from the bus stop to your house in your jeans, run to a funeral, etc, then you'll know if you REALLY care what others think of you.

I've done the mechanic thing before too (actually it was when I was getting new tires - but same idea).
I also run to get my car after leaving it downtown or at a friend's house after a night of drinking.
I will sometimes run home from my kids' sporting events while my wife drives home because it is the most time efficient way to get my runs in on activity-filled weekends days.
But all of those are different from just running in place of walking.
Because we live in modern fat America, not in Kenya where the only way to get around is to jog or run to get there faster.

It's not considered "cool" to care about your schedule and be in a rush, except in certain places (i.e., New York).
This doesn't just apply to jogging. In a certain mountain west city, I've seen people get made fun of for walking fast.

I'm so happy I live/work in Boston so that this isn't a problem. However, when I went to one of my offices in LA, my co-workers there did call me out for how fast I walked, even though I felt like I was going pretty casually.
Walking indicates that you are in control, an alpha who dictates the schedule. You won't see the president or CEO running to make it to the meeting on time.
The reality is that most of us do not set the schedule and need to hustle to get it all done.

It is a good point but there are lots of things I do in video games that I just don't do in real life. Though sometimes I wish I could. Guess I must care what others think or maybe I just don't like to be sweaty all the time (I live in FL).
