Wariner is one of the greatest 400m runners ever. In his prime he was absolutely untouchable in the event, and his 43.45 still stands as one of the strongest marks ever run. I've been a fan of the man ever since seeing him singlehandedly carry Baylor from 8th to 1st in the 4x4 at NCAAs in 2004.
But he's been out of elite running for a long time, and he's no mid distance runner. 20 flat 200, 43.35 quarter, certainly low 10s 100m in 2005...the guy was always way speedier than all the LRC posters who wanted him to move up to the 800 because he's skinny and white understood. The guy's the perfect quartermiler, but he is a sprinter, through and through.

More power to JW for doing what he loves, despite his knowing he ain't a superstar nowadays. Just because he can't dominate the 400m doesn't mean he has to quit a lifestyle which is goal-oriented and healthy. If his head is on straight, then what he is putting himself through brings rewards that are deeply personal, even though the small-minded can't comprehend.
It's about time!
First of all: 1200m? This sounds like one of the deadliest distances out there - we need more of them.
Second: Track & Field News does not list an AR at this distance. Could this be a sneaky AR attempt?
Finally, as is well known on these boards, I was in the sub 1:50 prediction camp for JW 800m race a few years ago. I was wrong there. I'm curious why he'd come back at a longer distance having not had a breakthrough at the intermediary distance. Perhaps he's taken a couple years to put in true MD training...?
Has there ever been a 1200 m race before?

Ok, I buy that. He could have 45 speed at 33, and after 2 years of middle distance training see what he could do.
I wonder if he talks to Hart or hangs with MJ.
I'd pay to watch him and MJ do a tempo 200's workout post prime.

1. CPT just ran a 3:55 MILE at Wanamaker. I know where my money is... Where is this meet?
I believe that it's a 6 lap race where the guy in last has to drop out after every lap. So it's more of a jog/sprint race. I doubt that it will go under 3 minutes.

He ran the 100m in like 10.9 last year. Surprised he can even manage sub-46 with that kind of speed.

Yeah, CPT takes it easily. I believe his PB is 3:34, no one else has a chance.
Somebody else suggested this is a "devil takes the hindmost" style race. That makes this much more interesting and gives Wariner a better chance. Otherwise I totally agree, he has zero chance against even a 4:15 miler in an open 1200, much less a 3:55 miler.

I get what you are saying but runners are typically pretty competitive at double their best distance, especially if they train for it. Is there something different about 400m runners in the 800m?
I agree people latched onto Wariner as a potential 800m guy for silly reasons (skinny, white) but I'm curious to see what would happen if any sub-44s 400m runner really went for it in the 800m. It's never happened, has it? As far as i know, Alberto Juantereno is the fastest 400m runner who really trained for the 800m and he didn't break 44. Maybe I'm forgetting somebody? Personally, I suspect that some of the fast 400m guys without blistering 100m times like Michael Johnson or Wade van Niekerk would make amazing 800m runners. Unfortunately we're unlikely to see someone like this try it until they are past peak form.
International Men’s 1200-metres Pursuit - 9:30 p.m.
With a field representing a variety of track distances, the men’s 1200-metres pursuit should be an intriguing event to cap off the Grand Prix d’Athlétisme de Montréal. There’s prize money on the line for the leader of each lap. 3-time Olympic champion Jeremy Wariner of the USA will need to rely on his 400-metres speed, and 800-metres specialist Ryan Martin of the USA will look to stretch out his range in order to win a few extra dollars. Local favourite, and 2016 Olympic semi-finalist, Charles Philibert-Thiboutot of Quebec is in fine early season form recently placing fourth in the Wannamaker Mile and setting a new indoor mile Quebec record. Philibert-Thiboutot will need to rely on his strength when battling Wariner and Martin. Former beer mile world record holder Lewis Kent of Mississauga, Ont., will do his best to hang with this talented field.
