So I found my high school class ring the other day. When does it become "lame" to wear it? I really like it. Paid with my own money to have it all platinum and a few more things done to it, but I can't help but think I'm being judged for wearing it again.

How long do you wear the medal from the race you just won? That's how long you wear a class ring.
maybe over summer break until college starts.
I sold mine for gold a few years ago (almost 20 yrs after HS), it had sat in a box forever... I paid for mine with my own hard earned $ too at 4.25 hr back then I think... had some upgrades added to the fake glass stone. ugh... my folks told me at the time it was a waste of money, but I was sure it would be a great keepsake. It's not. For all HSers reading this... save your $.

It is a huge waste of money. Find out how much you can get for it based on gold prices and watch the market, then sell.
One of the best early lessons I got in wants vs needs and how spending other people's money distorts values. Best friend was going nuts tricking out his ring. I got pumped up, went home, showed my mom the catalog (big book with pictures and prices for the youngsters in the room). She said "that's great son, as long as you're willing to pay for it". Suddenly, the ring seemed like a huge waste of money!
My mom convinced me that it was a waste of money and to not get one...... I hadn't even remembered that class rings were a thing until this thread
I didn't get a class ring. No way I was going to pay for that.
I live in Texas and the only people I ever see wear class rings are Texas A&M grads - and they wear them forever.
About the same amount of time that it's acceptable to wear your letterman jacket.
I remember during high school when the presenter was trying to sell us on rings, he says that the high school ring is the second most important ring in your life after your wedding ring. Hahahaha. I didn't personally get one, but I'm sure many people believed the presenter at the time. I didn't really question it when he said that at the time. I can't believe they would try to dupe us like that.

I can do one better than all of you. Didn't buy ring. Didn't buy cap and gown and fake diploma. Didn't buy ticket for graduation ceremony and didn't go. Didn't pay for yearbook picture and didn't appear in yearbook. Didn't buy yearbook. Didn't pay for nor attend prom or ball or whatever they called dance. Didn't buy letter jacket nor letter. Didn't pay for the big trip to far away city with band (was in cool jazz band - we made fun of marching band, too) but still went (don't know who paid - sure as hell not my parents). And yes, all this stuff did cost.

Has anyone actually purchased or worn a high school class ring in the past 25 years? Are they even a thing?
They are still a thing in the Midwest. I think most kids get a cheaper one sans gold/platinum. A lot of the kids at my HS get one for about $200.

Really? I attended a university in Illinois that drew mostly from the state (Chicago, St. Louis, suburbs, small towns) but also to a lesser extent from other parts of the Midwest and the country. I don't recall one person wearing or mentioning a high school class ring. What did I miss?

Depends on the caliber of the high school.
In my case, I wear my high school ring.
