This is par for the course. If you like the career and feel like it is rewarding to you, I would bend and do your time trial on your own. If you intend to leave soon, consider your client's needs first anyway. Bridges are burned in this industry and that makes no sense.
If you don't give a f*** and are selfish, call in sick Saturday and run under 50:00.
ok, I work for a public accounting firm and have been putting in about 60 hours a week for the past couple months during tax season. I've been able to balance running and work pretty well up to this point. However, I just got an email today from the boss saying that there's some issue on an audit we perform that's gonna require all of us to work basically the entire weekend. Normally, this wouldn't be a problem for me. However, I'd planned to run a 10 mile race on Sunday morning. This is pretty important to me and was gonna be my last big test before running Boston in a couple weeks. So needless to say, I'm pretty damn pissed right now. One complicating factor is that the race is about a 4 hour drive, so I can't work and run...I think it's gotta be one or the other. What would you do in this situation?
Tell your boss that you are sorry but have a prior committment. Is he/she going to fire you after putting in so many hours?
Couple obvious questions:
1. Will your boss make an exception for you if you explain your situation?
2. Can you make up the weekend work today and Sat?
3. Do you really want to get another job over this? If so, then that is the real issue.
3B. Is your running is more important than this job?
Tell him you volunteer Saturday mornings at a camp for kids with terminal cancer and at such short notice they can't get somone to cover for you and the kids won't be able to go on their day trip to the zoo.
You'll probably burn in hell, but you'll get to run your race.
Unless you're going to run in the Olympics, skip the race, get up early and do a hard 10 miles on your own.
Rent Office Space tonight...then you'll know what to do.
Tough one. Try talking to the boss and explain your situation and the importance of your Sunday plans. Mention that you've been planning for this months in advance and you have hotel reservations set up. Even offer to make up the work hours at another time. Good luck.
I dunno what to tell you, but if you had kids, you could get out of it.
Everyone around here with kids gets time off whenever the little snots are sick, need shots, potty training, or whatever the hell kids need.
I'm getting tired of covering for my co-workers who want to have kids AND a career. Just because I'm single doesn't mean I should get all the crap shifts. Maybe I got stuff to do, too. Anyone can have a kid.

this is some serious crap...looks like I was the butt end of an April Fools joke. I have to admit it was a pretty good one. I just went in to ask my boss if there was anything I could go ahead and get started on so I wouldn't have to work as much over the weekend b/c I have a race. He said "well looks like you're not racing now" or something similar. I got seriously pissed at that point, then he broke down laughing and said it was all a joke and everyone in the office was in on it. So good news, race is still on. Thank goodness...

Tell your boss you're going to the race (Cherry Blossom I assume) and that you'll be back as soon as you can afterward. Race is at 8, done by 9, in teh car by 10, at work by 2. Then get your shit done at work and stay late if you have to. Your boss shoudl be cool with this.

Why do people start posts with "OK"? As soon as I see that, I don't want to read any further. It's like if someone comes up to you and tries to start a rant with "OK, blah blah blah." You know there is no good coming after the "ok." I find this an awful way to initiate anything, and would much rather have you just state what you have to say. OK?
