I think most could go sub 11. There are countless amounts of collegiate and high schoolers who can break 11 year after year. Not an impossible feat if you're one of the fastest in the world at your event.
I don't believe that elite distance runners can only run 12 seconds and people talk on here like sub 11 is impossible.

Sub 11? Hell no. Sub 11.9? Yes, for the most elite of long distance. Now for mid - distance, there are probably a good amount who can snatch 10.99 or less.

This forum is rife with people who emphasize lots of easy miles as 'base' and de-emphasize speedwork. Sub 11 is nice, but not terribly impressive in the grand scheme of things; quite common for pro up to 1500, though not sure about 5k.

A book from like 50 years ago? Rudisha can't break 11? His 400 is in the lower 45s, Clayton Murphy broke 12 in high school, surely he's gotten much faster. Now maybe I was wrong cause I was more thinking the speed based 800 runners but surely some can break 11

Elite 800m, some will I'm sure just depends on their background. It's a mixed bag at the 800. But the 800 is hardly 'distance' like the OP says.
Don't mention the 1500m. Farah is 9th All Time. You just saw him be obliterated by an 11.5.
In front of him are Iguider (endurance) Morceli (endurance) Lagat (endurance) El G (endurance).
The guys that could even begin to not embarrass themselves over 100m will be 800m guys that also run the 15, like Coe.
Case closed move on. If you lot still have something to say just watch the 3:28 man run a 12.9 flailing his skinny limbs about another 10 times or so and then remember that 3:28 is 56.5 400m pace (not fast).

There's no way that was 100% Mo. He's closed 5k/10k races faster than 12.9 his final 400. He most likely didn't do his full warm up and didn't want to risk injury for this tv show.

It is much easier for a distance runner to put 4 rolling start 100ms together than get out of the blocks and sprint one. Bolts rolling 100m is like 8.7. Think about it.
