Im interested, are americans banned from this great historical marathon or just chicken? Well managed, athletes are treated extremely well, fast course really every opportunity to run fast.
I guess this has been a trend for americans not to run marathons out of the US.
I don't believe this dude just runs 1 x per day singles.
It's not really difficult running races with an injury of some sort. Once you get going at a great enough effort, most of the aches and pains go away and you are just left with the normal pain of effort.
That said, Kawauchi is my 2nd favorite runner behind Zach Miller.
From Larner's race preview it just seems that Fukuoka has just sort of fallen out of the limelight a bit, though looking at the field it seems to only lack the very top tier Kenyans and Ethiopians (and by that I only mean the ones chasing the big wins at London and New York and such) and the Americans.
Also what an impressive run from the guy in forth, with something like a 7 minute PB to run in the 2:10s

What is that, the tenth time that Coolsaet has run 2:10 but come up short of Drayton's record? Poor guy must be pounding the floor.
It's like an amateur who tries to go 2:59, but hits 3:00 over and over. Like a recurring bad dream. Feel for him.

Incredible run by full-time worker Kawauchi. Most likely the 1st clean finisher as well.

It is a shame that there are not more insights to his training available to western runners- maybe they are in Japanese on the internet. Given that he works full time, he is someone who many western runners can aspire to as he is very successful with his method.

I've never seen any charts or full workout logs anywhere, but from articles and interviews his training seems to be mostly like this (anyone can correct me if I've made a mistake)
Runs all (most?) mileage in singles
Intervals once a week
Sometimes super long cross country runs on weekends (4-6 hour runs if I remember correctly, which lines up with the 100k mentioned above)
Lots of racing

2 hour singles most days with ocassional just 10-13 mile runs will get you ready for a marathon
