Just don't wear them in California. You'll be fine.
Seriously though, what chemicals are used in these shoes though that required them listing a disclaimer?

Practically any solvent based glue or plastic. Every shoe could make the same claim probably.
The smell that shoes have or that new car smell is the scent of carcinogens.

California has restrictions on every possible substance known to cause cancer. You would have a hard time buying a tube of contact cement or a can of paint thinner there. They must be worried that residents will drink it.
Substances like Toluene for example.
I have 125 miles in my Altra Instinct 3.5. The upper is already torn across the medial side, end to end. Be wary of their shoes.

But do you have cancer?
I live in California and that sign is everywhere. Pretty much every public building. If anything contains a substance that California has deemed to cause.cancer that must be displayed. Everyone here ignores it because it's everywhere
The disclaimer is on any package anywhere. Go to Home Depot and buy a tube of glue and there it is in the fine print. Not sure how or why California has this sort of priority.

Most shoe companies seem oblivious to the stresses the foot puts on the junction of the material with the sole.
With modern techniques of being able to weld on tougher overlays on those areas it is inexcusable for shoes to just blow apart along that line.
The racing flats made by Salming have it right. I have a pair that are pounded into the ground but they still haven't torn on the sides because of welded overlays.

While not torn, my Nike Speed Rival 6 is pretty caved in on the medial side, too.

Correct. The signs are obviously there to be ignored. As per some expert posters, the only time these compounds can cause harm is when they are drunk by the gallons or swimming in a pool filled with them.
