I think you need this mile vs. world cross thing drilled into your head more. Read this log:

Steve Scott's 81-82 log. He only did one XC race, the TAC one. I can't remember if the TAC race was used as the trials of world cross or not, but if they were (and judging from the comp. it looks like they were) Steve Scott had to have denied his spot if he were sixth. By your logic, Steve Scott is a wuss.
Secondly, let's assume that it wasn't a qualifier and he didn't bail. Your other argument is that guys who run indoors (Myers, etc) should run cross anyway. And the same with guys like Fam or decided to run the USA road champs races. According to Steve's log he went to NZL did some track races there and then came back during World Cross time (March) and did a road 10k. This is quite similar to what a lot of US guys today are doing, the same ones you are calling out for not running cross. This should show that not everyone does world cross or has it in their plans. And look how Steve did, he had one of his best seasons! If you are going to call Myers or Fam on this, then you have to call Scott.
As for Broe, that's your own beef. It looks like guys in the 80s got spots and denied them. Go back and hack on them too. Or change the name of the thread to "Broe and whoever else are wusses" but don't call out all the other guys...
