Looking at the Rottedam finish, one could make a strong argument that Carlos intentionally finished second as to take off Olympic pressure.

Charlie Spedding (bronze in LA marathon) said that Salazar suffered because he wanted to be world #1 in everything, 10K, XC and marathon. This explains his drop off in form after 1983. Spedding argued that if you are aiming at the top spot over 26 miles everything else has to take second place to that aim.

wow shit his pants mid marathon and runs 208. and it looked physical too, having to push through crowds and dodge things. man these guys were tough as hell
