What is ridiculous is that it he didn't adopt the same stress relief strategy in RIo. It clearly worked for him in Edmonton; he should have paid for sex (with a non-cocaine using prostitute) the night before competition in Rio. Hopefully he has learned from his failure in Rio and will get back to his winning strategy.
Shawn Barber got dinged with cocaine use, had hooker testify at his hearing

Satomayor, Inika McPherson, now Shawn Barber. Clearly there is something about cocaine that makes it a unique PED for the high jump. These are all in-comp testing, so it is clearly being used to get results as a stimulant. The "incidental partying" defense has been officially worn out.

Canadians skirting the doping rules, chucking cans onto baseball field during games.
What's going on in Canada? -
I thought for a second the hooker reference was perhaps to former Aussie vaulter Steve Hooker. For what it's worth, Shawn made a really bad decision regarding the drug use. This is really no one else's business. I don't know him personally, but I'm sure he's a good guy overall despite this. Moral of the story, don't go on CraigsList.
-
Wow. He meets up with a woman on Craig's list who has snorted cocaine and drunk 26 oz of vodka and during the encounter a guy (pimp?) is in the room the whole time? He's lucky if a positive test for cocaine is the worst that happens to him from that kind of stuff.
It also seems to me that if he tested positive for cocaine, intent and how it got into his body isn't supposed to matter or you get into all of the crap about sabotaged toothpaste, and so on. -

BTW it's SHAWN Barber -
can't keep the libido in check like the stories with his pa.

As to whether the cocaine was taken unintentionally, corroborating testimony from a hooker(?) and her pimp(?) doesn't seem very credible. Can you even get cocaine at detectable levels in your bloodstream from kissing?
Even if it was unintentional, I'm surprised he wasn't suspended at least through Rio. This just seems like a slap on the wrist.
Although, it probably explains why he seemed so rattled or distracted in Rio. -

A few thoughts.
1) I think calling her a hooker is incorrect as Barber claims no money exchanged hands.
2) Does it seem a little suspicious to anyone that he was worried about having someone who is drug free?
Why if you are trying to have sex with a random stranger would you care if she is drug free. Presumably, you are going to wear protection so why would you care if she was on drugs?
3) Is it common knowledge that you can get cocaine from kissing someone?
One thought for me.
The apple doesn't fall too far from the tree. Those Barber men must have huge sex drives. Remember his dad was sentenced to 36 months in prison for having sex with a 17-year old when he was 45-year old HS teacher.

If you read that summation, you will see that he had no intention nor knowledge about the possibility that his contact with the prostitute would lead to a positive drug test. He didn't intentionally ingest any cocaine.
-
Once again Athletics Canada proved it's corrupt.
How can you DQ him from the Canadian Championships and strip him of his Canadain record which he jumped at the event yet let him go to the Olympics? In Canada the Championships are used to determine who goes to the Olympics.
They knew of the result yet allowed him to compete in Rio clearly because he was a great medal prospect. If it had been some minor track athlete they would have kicked them off the team.
Shame on you Canada!!! -

Hilarious. Shawn must be into some kinky Sh*t -
Two thoughts.
1) It's absurd that cocaine use (out of competition) would result in a 4-year ban.
2) That being said, this disturbs me.
Pole Vault Power @polevaultpower
The level of cocaine metabolites in Shawn Barber's system was higher than Inika McPherson and she got a 21 month ban. I can't even... -
This is all a load of malarkey. Incredible defense story, I must say, though. This will definitely go down as one of the all-time great stories.
My question is, how deep did the 'investigation' go? Were there phone records proving the meet and greet took place? On and on...
And btw... who kisses a hooker on the lips? Let alone, kissing a hooker? lol

1) Calling her a hooker is absolutely correct. "M" is her pimp. His actions were those of a pimp. Shawn either lied when he said no money exchanged hands, or he exchanged something that wasn't cash. Pimps don't work for free.
3) No, but apparently it is scientifically proven to be possible, and will be much more common knowledge now. -

I don't know the details of Sotomayor's story off the top of my head, but McPherson and Barber both had incredibly low levels of cocaine metabolites in their systems that were NOT performance enhancing and were consistent with their stories.
What's ridiculous is that McPherson got a 21 month ban and Barber got a slap on the wrist. His levels were HIGHER than hers, which goes to show you what incredibly low trace levels were in her system at the time. -
"W" in this story is clearly a woman with a drug problem being pimped out by her "boyfriend", and possibly a human trafficking victim. Did she get any help at any point from anyone?
-
Maybe the testimony by Barber, the allegedly unpaid woman, and the allegedly unpaid gentleman also in the room during the encounter is all true - apparently the Canadian authorities believed them.
However, there is a long history of very far-fetched excuses for testing positive. Given that history, people who test positive cannot expect their stories just to be taken at face value. -

And an Alcohol problem, drank a fifth of vodka that night as well. Yikes.
