This morning Jim Walmsley destroyed the FKT for both the Rim to Rim and R2R2R at the Grand Canyon. That's correct, took down the one way record as the start to his out and back attempt.
Took 5 mins off the R2R record and 25 off the out and back.

Expected. I'm glad he gave it a go and had a good day. He is a very special runner and endurance athlete. Every record on the books right now in technical trail is at risk of going down to Walms.
Still waiting for the movie on his WS debut. -

Ummmm, shouldn't he be in USAF right now? -
He served his time.

Guy improved A LOT in one year considering he could barely sneak under 3hr for R2R in the north south direction in 2015. Must be the high altitude training.
He also took 41min off his Lake Sonoma 50-mile time with a 6:00 this year compared to a 6:41 in 2015. He just took 34-min off his 55km time at that same race in Flag. He did that 55km in 3:30 just eight days ago. Now this record. How does this guy recover so fast?
In 2015 he ran the JFK 50 in 5:51. Not even close to Max King yet (current CR holder). But what will Mr. Jim run this year? -
My bad. He only ran a 3:01 for the single R2R crossing last year.
-
He's too fast.

He should skip Western States and do Run Rabbit $ prize and Comrades 50 in Africa $ prize.
Western States keeps too much money to itself. IMHO -
Just like Max King and David Laney he is another 14:00-13:50 5km guy. Max and Dave aren't winning WS100 or Comrades anytime soon, let alone in CR pace. Heck even Krar was a 3:44 guy
-
They are not as good, imho. They are sponsored and not winning. They need to win like Killian or Karl Meltzer.
Jim is capable of winning like Killian and Karl. Well, needless to say I'm a big fan.
Western states should be giving at least $10,000 to 1st place. -
WS has no motivation to pay out big $ to winners, because they get competitive fields every year. The win is worth much more than the prize money because it's possibly the most famous ultra marathon around, and you'll get bonuses from sponsors by winning.
-
He cracks under pressure and can't win the big ones with competition. Something goes wrong and he throws in the towel. Until he actually wins against competition or overcomes trauma in a race he's unproven.
-
Jim was not "good" until this year. He ran like 5:50 at the relatively flat JFK 50 last year and now he is running 6-5:50 on courses like Lake Sonoma and the Grand Canyon with 8,000-10,000' of climbing. People that talented, who have been running for half their lives, just don't make big jumps in fitness like that.
His ability to recover from hard, high mileage training and frequent racing is uncanny. -
This guy epitomizes the fact that there is no drug testing in ultra running, none whatsoever.
-
WORD.
This guy almost got chicked by Camille Herron in a road 100km just last year.

But Jim wasn't sponsored so your argument doesn't hold water.
Next ...
I wonder if we can look up the IRS form for Western States to see how many on staff and how much money coming and going?
Or is that too invasive?
Obama and the IRS did the worse to the Tea - Party, i.e. read Citizens of the United States of America. -
Not buying what you are selling.
Western States wants to be a big league race then be one. They didn't have ice water ready and they didn't have watermelon cut.
You must have skipped over this video of Jim at WS.

Well, like UTMB where they tried to use and abuse Killian Jornet, probably by using his likeness or something, anyone have the details?
Like UTMB, WS 100 may one day suffer from runners realizing that they should be paid something to run.
Happens all the time in dance, karate, zumba, ... NBA, NFL NLB ... -

that actually would be interesting to know. killian didn't want to talk badly about utmb's directors but if you read between the lines there was something about using him -
WS100 and UTMB are big events to win with no open prize money, but a win at one of those races is worth more in potential sponsorship money.
It was said that there was a falling out between UTMB and Killian over drug-testing/accusations.
What did Jim do in cross country in college? Usually the good ultra-trail guys have a decent cross over from 10k's on dirt. -
HAHAHA.. who puts Walmsley and Karl in the same sentence!!!??
That's like putting Oprah and Bekele in the same sentence.
With all due respect to Karl and his awesome accomplishments, the dude has never won a major 100 (UTMB, Western) or US Championship.
I would be $100 Metzler would run about 8 hours in a Grand Canyon R2R2R.. he's not just a "runner" more of a plodder.
