I guess whatever you can't do seems hard. A 16:00 5k seems way harder and more unattainable to me than a 50 sec 400m
I'm not going to dig up my copy right now, but the AAHPER test battery, which measured the 600-yard ability of every US school kid and many college age, has 95th percentiles nowhere near a level trainable to sub 50 at any age. I've posted about it here before, you can search it up if you want. The best 95th is something like a 95 second 600y, equivalent to about a 66 second 400m. Go ahead and train them to sub 50 if you can.
You and anyone else you saw running sub 50's were in a very small class of people with the specialized traits necessary to run 1 lap well enough to score at track meets. The general population does not have those traits.
