How many hours do these guys actually practice together? Anyone know?

Many relay squads put their fastest runner on the second leg. If you get your handoffs timed correctly, that runner can carry the stick for a longer distance than the other legs. There are other considerations such as who runs turns the best, who is the best out of the blocks, etc.

This is exactly right. It also explains the DQ; they tried to time it so that Gatlin carried the stick as long as possible, but he ended up grabbing it TOO early.
Well the USA needs to have a select group of sprinters that run together on a regular basis like the USA soccer team does. The guys over 30 have seen their day- thank you but good bye. Tyson's beard also caused too much wind resistance-

It was Tyson Gay.....who has to be the stupidest sprinter on earth. Track 101 - DO NOT PUT YOUR HAND BACK UNTIL YOU ARE IN THE ZONE!
Gay should never be selected for a team USA relay ever again!
FIRE MITCHELL NOW!
Need to amend....the infraction was on Gatilin. Hopefully he is done. Time for new blood all the way around.
1 medal in last 7 tries for USA men in the 4x100. 6 DNFs/DQs including the Tyson Gay doping situation.
Meanwhile, Jamaica/Bolt 7 golds.
Mitchell's raise will only be 5% this year....
Mitchell has to have something on USATF. No other explanation.
He won't be fired. He surely must have something on the USATF.

1. Another Embarrassing 4x100 for the US
2. The US is likely to have more mdist-dist medals than sprints by 2024.
3. I wish USATF would address glaring issues with US sprinting
4. USATF will hide behind the fact this could be a 30+ medal Olympics
This year it's almost balanced. The 4x400 could tip the balance but right now it's one gold, silver, and bronze for sprinting with just the 4x400 left and one silver and bronze for distance with 3 events left. So distance has medals in 2 of 3 with 3 left and sprints have medals in 3 of 6 with 1 left...
Sprints
100m (silver)
200m (0)
400m (bronze)
110 HH (0)
400 IH (gold)
4x100m relay (0)
4x400m relay tbd (us best seed)
Distance
800m (bronze)
1500m tbd
5000m tbd
10000m (0)
3000m steeplechase (silver)
Marathon tbd

I THINK THEY ONCE HAD BREAKFAST TOGETHER IN A HOLIDAY INN
See--they can't get anything right: they needed to eat at a Holiday Inn Express. Idiots.

Naah. They like him. That's how it seems to work. Fail to get the stick around three times, yeah, you know, it's all good.
Nice time to resurrect the implausible excuses generator for the USATF, Alan Abrahamson.

Whoever is in charge of usa swimming
As a coach who actually has witnessed US team practice I can tell you its the method thats being utilitized that is causing the problems. First can't use voice command of "stick." In an Olympic or Worlds stadium you have to use other methods. I don't want to go into the weeds with this but calling stick also has a time delay in that IF the outgoing runner hears the command there is a delay of time for the hand going back that on 3 handoffs amounts to nearly a half second.
Dennis Mitchell is old school and not going to change so he shouldn't coach a relay team ever again at the international level.
Hurts as an American to watch this comedy of errors but I feel no sympathy for any on that foursome on the track. Gay cost the 2012 team and 5 other guys their medals with his choice to cheat. He deserved no "second" chance. Gatlin has cheated as well and he is a veteran who should know the most basic relay rule of all - don't put your hand back before you are in the zone. Rodgers has always struggled on relays in various spots for US and like Gatlin you know the most basic rule is don't put baton in a guys' hand before you enter the damn zone. Bromell I don't feel any sympathy for either as he was OBVIOUSLY not 100% and he should have told the staff or the staff should have told him, you are not 100% so we are replacing you. In the end that last decision is the coaches and it was a fail of epic proporations as no DQ the US still falls to Japan and nearly to Canada and China.
Let the hate consume you old man! No sympathy for a 19 year old kid who ran one of the gutsiest races of his life. What a tough guy you are! You've really proved how big of a man you are with this post.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
