I could never understand why one would run a non-NCAA event (ie. 500m or 1000m) at the IC4As if you are not already qualified for NCAAs. Even if you run a great time, it does nothing for you - especially when the IC4As is a pathetic NIT-type meet.

I was just thinking the same thing earlier today. To me, having my coach enter me in an event that is not even run at the national meet the last weekend of qualifying is a vote of no-confidence. Obviously the coach doesn't think the athlete is capable of qualifying, but wants to use the points from a less-crowded event.
At the same time though, these events are scored and to many team, the IC4As still mean something as a team title. If you had a guy who was very good @ the 800 or Mile (1:50 or 4:06 or so), but not on the verge of getting over the hump to 1:48 or 4:00 why wouldn't you race him in the 1000 for the probably 10 points (not to mention an individual title for the athlete)? Sure the athlete would want to qualify, but if he can't why not have him do some good elsewhere?
Not too many guys qualify out of the IC4As for nationals. Let them chase their schools' obscure indoor records.
90% of athletes know well before the gun goes off that they are not about to qualify for the NCAA's. All the guys who run 1:55 in the 800 or 14:40 for 5k or 49.2 in the 400 know that. The way you tell, they should just sit down and not bother with sport. I mean, they're not making the NCAA's.
Hey, everybody, if you're not making the NCAA's, just don't bother.
After you make to the NCAA's, nobody particulary gives a shit, by the way, unless you win the thing.
right on, I went to a d2 school and thats why we went to ic's. Almost every year the d2 qualifing window has closed so we sent guys who had qualified but wanted a tune-up milers would ussually run the 8 or 1000, 400 guys would run the 200, 5k guys would run the 3k. Basically we would go to get in a last time trial before nationals if we needed it or to chase an obscure school record. The 500,1000 or dmr, this is the first year thats been a nationals event in d2 same with the 200.
