Hurdling the regular barriers is much faster and more efficient than stepping on them. I can't remember the actual statistics, but you lose time if you step on the barrier. That's actually why some guys at the elite level don't even step on the water barrier, they just hurdle it like every other one. But to do that effectively, you have to be running pretty darn quick. In any case, teach yourself to hurdle the barriers with both legs. That way you never have to stutter step, or step on the barrier because you are in a bad position to hurdle with your dominant leg.
