3000m, 7:58.0, Gerry Lindgren, Wash St. U., Karlsruhe (DEU), 7/5/65.
Rupp Rules!!!!!!!!!!
cue up the chorus of people to start belittling him.
Maybe a dumb question, but is McDougal too old? 7:55 today, right?
7;58 was impressive FORTY years ago.
Hey Realist - Maybe it was forty years ago, but look at all the advantages Lindgren had that Galen doesn't.....Hahahahaha! Just kidding man, good point.
Galen is impressive, but he still didn't run as fast as Josh McDougal in the 3000 today. Galen with all his professional coaching and state of the art gadgets and training facility still can't top Josh who trains alone, goes to school full time, and isn't being catered to with coaching, facilities, training and racing schedule, etc. It makes one wonder what Josh could do with Galen's set up.
but it isn't impressive today, I mean, look at all the other Junior runners who have done it?
No American Junior save one besides Rupp have ever run 7:58 (no AJ have ever done it indoors but Galen)!
Galen's time is impressive and should be recognized as such.
Side note: Lindgren's time, run on board tracks, som 40 years ago, is superior, I believe.
I am very impressed with Galen, but I am equally impressed with Josh McDougal.
By the way, how old is Brent Vaughn? I consider him to be a very serious threat on the American scene in the future, too. Tinman
No duh it's superior....it's .02 faster!!!! ;)
Galens 7:58 was a pretty dang solid time, considering he did end up taking the lead for like 2 laps or so in the second mile. Besides, Josh is specifically training for the 3k and mile, while Galen is obvisouly training more towards World Jr Cross, a much longer, slower distance. its not like hes in his top 3k race shape. ... just something to think about.
One interesting thing is that Lindgren's 7:58.0 3000 at age 19 converts to within a few seconds of his age 18 2-mile indoor record (8:40.0), so in his freshman year at WSU, he was already peaking out. I suspect/hope that Rupp, McDougal, Withrow etc. will have years of improvement ahead.
Look guys, this is INDOORS, and it's MARCH!!!! Give a guy a break, will ya?
Galen Rupp is what, about 18 right?
He'll probably run about 13:19 for 5000 outdoors this summer. Very talented runner with a very relaxed and easy going kind of personality....he'll go far.
Jason
7.58 is not better than 13.42, if we use the normal conversation add 2 sec to 3k-pace (400m) for an aerobic strong runner.
To run 13.19 he needs 7.45 in the summer and that's very fast.
