I know that all the distance world records were set with virutally even splits. But what is the fastest you remember anyone starting a mile, 5000, XC race, etc?

In high school I had a friend (11:30 2 miler) start a 2 mile race in 64 seconds. I was confused and in complete disbelief. He had no idea how to run.
Every HS distance race starts at a remarkably fast pace. I have fond memories of puking on myself halfway through the 3200.

no. where i come from we ran smart in high school. we would laugh at guys like you for the first mile and roll you up the last 2.
Men's 5000 at Canadian Championships last year ... Paul Morrison went out in about 57/58, 2:03 is the 5000 by himself ... chasing A standard a bit too hard ... he was passed with 200 to go, and finish in 13:47
Didn't Filbert Bayi go out in like 52 or so in some of his 1500/miles?
He went out in 52 in the final of the commonwealth games 1500m 1974 and set the world record in the process.
bump
today, in a 800, a guy went out in 57 and ended up finishing in 2.11
the 4k at world cross is absolutely ridiculous. You may go all out to only find out you're in 50th place at the half mile mark.
A friend and I lined up at the front of a hilly 5k.
Just before the start, a guy who'd been striding back and forth came up to us looking very nervous, pushed in front of us and said, "I'm going out in 65 seconds!!!".
My friend and I looked at each other and laughed...
I said to him, well we're going out in 65 seconds too. :o)
I have actually split 54/2:08 in a 800 once
My worst was 52/2:15 in an 800M. I almost walked the last 100.
I saw a kid in a 3200 go out in 57 and finish in 9:57.
1990 Boston Marathon....first mile 4:24.
Steve Jones in European marathon, 1986
Lead at 15k in 43 mins. Finished in 2h22, position 20
He must have hurt so bad.
Also
Ismael Kirui, age 18 at 1993 world champs went through 1 mile in about 4.01 and hung on to win the 5000m in 13.02
At the "Worlds best 10k" in 2003 Asmae Leghzoui said she was going to beat Paula Radcliffe. Radcliffe ran the first 3k in 8.58 and Leghzoui was still with her, but Radcliffe had dropped her by the time she reached 5k in 14.48, which was faster than the then record for 5k.
