If you thought Michael Carter planned for his daughter to follow and surpass his footsteps in the shot put think again. When Michelle came home in the 7th grade and said she wanted to throw the shot, she had no idea about her dad's past with it. Michelle said, "I didn't grow up knowing my dad it. I actually picked the sport because someone said 'why don't you try out for the track team?'"
Her dad said he told her, ""Who put you up to it? Do you realize what you're getting yourself into?"
There's no way Michelle knew what she was getting herself into, but the result was pretty special.
QT #2: Michael Says There is No Comparison Between Being Olympic Champion and Superbowl Champion
Michael was brought into the mixed zone where he and Michelle shared a special hug to celebrate her accomplishment. He was asked what it's like being a Super Bowl champion and an Olympic gold medallist. He said, "There's no comparison... winning the gold medal at the Olympics you're the best in the world at the time. With the Superbowl you have the chance to win it every year. This only comes around once every four years or once in a life time." He added, "I'm numb right now."
He said the shot requires a special type of discipline as "you have to go do this day in and day out with no one watching. With football if you don't push yourself the player next to you is going to push you."
Michael said he has told Michelle she can throw 21 meters if she does her best. "If you just do what we ask you, you can throw far. How far is up to you," he said.
Before the final throw, Michelle was just focused on doing her best. "All I could do was pray in that moment, you've got to give it your all," she said. She prayed, "Lord just help me give it my all," and then she unleashed a monster throw.
Michelle was elated to come out on top with the best throw of her life, in the final throw at the biggest competition of her life. It's what athletes dream of and she accomplished it saying "I'm just grateful I had this moment... I knew I wanted to win...To be able to have all those pieces finally come together that....at that one moment, is a great moment."
Michelle can now return to being a diva which is what she likes to do off the track. After she won, media members thought she was crying but instead she was applying lip gloss. Michelle wants to empower other women and girls to be confident in who they are. For Michelle that means being confident as a girly but bigger woman who is now the Olympic shot put champion.

Michael holds the HR record for the shot put. Consider a more unbreakable records than Alan Webb's 3:53.43. Second best performer is more than 5 feet behind Carter's best.
1. Boys shot put (81-3½, Michael Carter, Dallas Jefferson, Texas, 1979)
If you were in Sacramento, Calif., when Carter unleashed that toss, your first thought was pretty simple — would the 12-pound shot land on the track? It was that monstrous of a throw. Carter, who would go on to win a silver medal in the 1984 Olympics before embarking on an eight-year career in the National Football League, has nine of the Top 10 throws ever. Only Fallbrook (Calif.) thrower Brent Noon, who hit 76-2 in 1990, breaks up Carter's dominance. Noon was a superb shot-putter but physically, he was no match for the athletic, taller, stronger Carter.

It's insane. I recommend everyone pull a tape measure to this distance and hold a 12lb shot while looking at the cone both from a shot circle, and from the side. -
NBC tv showed two throws! Carter and Adams last throw. THANKS NBC!
-
His hs record is f'ing crazy.

Had Bob Beamon give a talk at the Training Center in Colorado Springs. We set up a tape in the lobby the length of his jump and challenged kids to see how many jumps it would take them to cover the distance. Gave them a good perspective. -
THANK YOU to Letsrun for recognizing Michelle. Younger folks on these boards may not appreciate the athleticism and amazing achievement of Michael and Michelle Carter. I saw Michael Carter at Texas Relays in 1979- what a phenomenon. What I love most of all is despite his NFL achievements he is still a track guy at heart. Kudos Michelle and dad Michael!

The Carter's are the most arguably the impressive Father-Daughter T&F athletes. Unbreakable HS record for dad, Superbowl Champion, Olympic Silver (Dad), Olympic Gold Medal (Daughter).
Michell on the podium getting her gold at 9:15 pm Rio time. :-) -
Maybe if they were dressed up like the beach volleyball chicks they could get better coverage.
-
if you really cared you'd watch the live stream where they showed all throws.

Without doubt that throw is the best athletic performance ever seen in high school sports. Nothing compares. Nothing.
