I agree with the OP. My criteria is:
Athletic- no chess, spelling bee, or whatever other crap makes it on ESPN these days.
Competitive- there has to be a winner or loser, not just recreational exercise.
Unjudged- no diving, gymnastics, boxing, figure skating, etc. As another poster said, competitors in these events are still athletes, and among the best athletes in the world at that. Not trying to put anyone down, but I believe that sports are about competitors deciding things on the field using an objective system, no outside decision-making. And again, there's a big difference between judging and enforcing the rules of a sport.
