GBR Andrew Butchart -- Profile, Progression, Questions?

Looks like his 13:13.30 has him ranked 33 in the world and it is the 52nd fastest time in 2016 with Ben True in 13:12.67 as non-African-born in front of him. Ilias Fifa of Spain ran 13:11.83, but he is from Morocco.

It's best not to ask these questions, but yes, seems like a white kid suddenly got world class wheels at 24 years old.

Really it's not too far off Rupp's 2010 season when he ran 13:07.35...pretty sure Rupps was also 24.

Does Butchart train with pros? Is he even a pro runner? His coach is Derek Easton...never heard of him before. I'm surprised he's not getting more attention right now given he's an unknown suddenly ranked 33 in the world over 5000m and lacing them up in Rio no less.

He's got a super smooth stride, I watched him destroy Andy Vernon in a road 10k in London back in June.

Im really hoping he makes the final. The 13:13 and 13:14 are two months apart which bodes well so he seems to be ready to race. lets go Butchie!

Interesting to see this as it has played out this season. Butchart ran well through his heat and then raced to a 13:08.61 and 6th place in the final of the 2016 Olympics. This from a runner with a 13:58 PR two years ago at 22 years old.

Looks like 2012/13 worked on his speed, and since then has applied it to longer distances?

Probably got lottery funding at some stage in the last couple of years and was able to train full time.

I remember hearing in the prelims that Butchart had broken a Scottish record that was something like a 40 years old. Must have been an impressive record. Anyone know who held it, and what it was?

Ummm, there is quite a lot of poorly founded accusations of American runners on this site.

Loved watching this guy at Rio, not to sound bad but it's nice to see a white British guy up there. I'd never heard of him until I saw him run the 5K heat and I was like wtf a white british dude running this fast?? 6th in OG is amazing. I can't believe how big a gap 5 seconds is in a 5K of that speed.
