So Hunter struggles to beat Brannigan again (like when they went 2nd-3rd in the Dream Mile to Fisher last year). Huge props to Brannigan. Kid's unreal!

Or Brannigan struggles in losing to Hunter again. Give 'em both kudos for setting personal bests.
And remember now, this is Hunter's first race in over two months, his rust buster after a Lyme Disease scare. A 3:57.15 after a major illness still isn't near to where his coach, Tinman, said he could run back in May at the Pre Classic, but so what? It's GREAT! And promising for an 18 year old.
If Hunter had not gone pro, might this have counted as his fourth high school sub-4:00 mile? Ryun ran five. Webb and Slagowski each ran two, and the seven other high school sub-4 guys did it once each.
No matter how you look at it, Hunter's 3:57.15 was pretty special tonight...with room for improvement, as he would, no doubt, emphasize in a millisecond. AND HE'S NOT EVEN 19 YET!
I'll take these results, for Drew and for Mikey, as victories, even in their 6th and 7th place finishing spots.

One of the worst posts of the year. Brannigan has nothing to do with hunter. He struggled to run faster than 3:57, that's all. Brannigan ran amazing.
CORRECTION...Got my numbers wrong. There are 9 total high school milers who broke 4:00. There's the four multiple sub-4 guys (Ryun, Hunter, Webb, and Slagowski) and the five one-time guys (Tim Danielson, Marty Liquori, Lukas Verzbicas, Matthew Maton, and Grant Fisher).
Nine guys under 4.
New Record for state of N.Carolina. Fastest mile ever run on N.C. soil.
New para - Olympic World Record.
Very nice.
Neither of the races was the fastest mile run on NC soil. Those records belong to Matthew Centrowitz who ran 3:54.02 indoors at JDL Fast Track in 2016 and Shannon Rowbury who ran 4:22.66 at the same venue in 2015.
very impressive improvement and performance from Mikey Brannigan, and Hunter has certainly made a fine recovery from his Lyme Disease and run a pr and 4th sub 4 in a year at 18. Obviously, we should not ignore the multiple 3:54-56s either.

Hunter's previoeus PB was 3:57.81i. I geuss this shows he did indeed have Lyme.
Branningan's PB was 4:03. What the hell had he been doing all year before this?
How does this show that he had Lyme disease? I don't see how 1+1 = 2 here.
I also wondered what Brannigan has been up to all year though.
I think he means that Hunter ran 3:57.81 indoors and then nothing as fast outdoors in spring and early summer (when faster would normally be expected), but 6-8 weeks later is finally running faster -- which "proves" he was just ill during the late spring and early summer. If it had been overtraining or some other issue, you wouldn't normally expect him to start running PRs again this quickly. It's an odd phrasing in that it implies that there was some doubt whether Hunter actually had Lyme disease (though I don't think that's what Rojo meant), but I agree that this result fits with the fact that he was ill earlier.

Alls I know is, Sir Walter Really? Is the best handle I have seen in a while. Nice work.
The NJNY group could rock an amazing 4x mile team.
I'm not sure that being a professional has any saying on whether you can count in HS results? Anyone know the ruling on that?
Either way, I'd say it is not his 4th sub 4 as a high schooler. It is August.
Also, devastating (or DEVESTATING) depending on how you look at it, that Slagowski is going to Penn St. I forgot he broke 4 twice.

Oh yeah. The world record was set in 1985 by Ireland. The team was a team of Ireland's all - time great milers. Eamonn Coghlan 4:00.2, Marcus O'Sullivan 3:55.3, Frank O'Mara 3:56.6 and Ray Flynn 3:56.98.
They ran 15:49.08. That's a 3:57.3 avg.
Merber PR 1500 is 3:34.5. Converts to a 3:51.7 mile
Colby PR 1500 is 3:34.8. Converts to a 3:52.1 mile
Gregorek PR is 3:36.0. Converts to a 3:53.3 mile
Palmer PR IS 3:36.9. Converts to a 3:54.3 mile.
Obviously it would be hard to PR on a relay, especially if you are running alone. BUT their PR's (converted from 1500 times) add up to 15:31.4.
That is almost 18 seconds under the record. Lots of leeway.
They don't run the mile nearly as often as the 1500 but going off their mile PR's they still come in almost 8 seconds under the record.
World record attempt forthcoming?
US record is about 16:09
Marc Hunter, 50% of Drew's genetic makeup (different than Shannon Rowbury's makeup), was on the American record-setting 4xMile Relay circa 1980. New Zealand with Walker, Dixon, Quax, and another broke the record, and the US was second. Something like that. Marc was on the team.
If anyone knows the date, the times, and the names, would you post them?

Who was on the relay with Mark? Assuming it was when he ran for Athletics West.
Didn't Mr. Know It All ask for the names, Hunter? It would help if you read before you post.
By the way, it's Marc, not Mark, Hunter.
What the heck, I'll continue the trend. Anyone know the names of Marc Hunter's teammates on that relay team? The names? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Saw some Athletics West teams from Hunter's time run some fast 4 x miles and even one American record but Hunter wasn't on any of them. Doubt he was actually on a team that set a record. By that point in his career he was a longer guy. Not a miler.
Marc Hunter was on a record-setting 4xMile Relay team, if the Internet is to be believed.
Yes, he was a 5k/10k guy, but he was pressed into 4xMile Relay duty on an Athletics West trip to New Zealand in 1981, where they set the American Record - according to the bio further below.
On another site comes the breakdown of that race for the Americans. The number 1 indicates that they won the race.

16:16.7 Athletics West 1 Qanganui 15.01.1981

USA Tom Smith (4:06.7) 09.10.57
USA Richie Harris (4:00.2) 04.03.59

I love how Merber, Alexander and Gregorik keep switching off who finishes first in each race this year...as far as I can tell this summer they've all each finished first among each other twice and I'm impressed how fit Merber got this summer after that stress fracture.
