Started to in college and then really grasped it after college. Still doesn't make sense to me, there's a Danish saying I picked up "Det burde ikk være sådan her" which basically says "It shouldn't be this way" and I try to live by that

I have an older brother so I got that message very young. I think I must have been 9-10 when he sat me down in a red ant pile then held me there until I was screaming and crying while laughed with delight. He regularly let me know by beating the shit out of me for the next few years that I don't matter and wouldn't be missed if I disappeared. By 12 I was bigger than him and he resorted to just being a jerk all the time.
Up until a couple years ago I basically hated him. Now I realized he unwittingly steeled me against this horrible world humanity has created by teaching me empathy.
