I was reminded during this morning's run of something I learned 10 years ago when I paused at the 15-mile point in a 20 mile Sunday run, drank a pint of water from a bottle I'd stashed by the side of the road, then put my head down and death-jogged another 4.8 miles before quitting at 19.8 miles and walking that last two-tenths of a mile: training in Mississippi in mid-July is a bi**h.
This morning, age 58, I headed out on an 8-miler that I've done several hundred times before, in all seasons and weathers. I sucked down more than a pint of cold water before leaving the car. I ran 9:45s for the first 3, which is par for the course for me these days in the summertime; not particularly good, but I was planning on cranking it down in the second half. I was fine until the turnaround, when I drank another pint. But as I headed back down the long straight sunlit highway, things quickly went south. I went from 9:45 to 10 to 11:15 in the next three miles.
What was going on? When I have a run as crappy as that, I always go to weatherunderground.com later in the day and see what was going on. From L to R: time, temperature, (heat index, starting at 8:15), dew point, percent humidity, etc.

When I got to my car at 9:03, the temperature gauge read 85 degrees. What interests me is the dewpoint between 7:55 and 8:35, which was the point when I went south: 75.2 degree. And the heat index at 8:35, when I was in maximum distress was 89.5. That was happening with radiant sun beating down. I had sunglasses and a white hat on, but that did nothing for the rest ot me.
Talk to me, hot-weather trainers, about how you handle weather like this. I can handle dry heat without too much trouble, but when that humidity is piled on, I just fall apart. I'm a cold weather runner. I ran my master's 10-mile PR race when it was 18 degrees. I'm in awe of runners who can handle this kind of weather burden. I ran 10 miles in the New Mexico desert about a week ago, with no water, and at 10 miles I felt great and was starting to hammer. But that's 2% humidity. When it gets swampy, I just can't hack it. I thought that pre-run hydration would make a difference, but today it did nothing.
