Amazing coincidence, I've read 17 out of that list of 20...what are the odds?

The End of Faith: Religion, Terror, and the Future of Reason (Sam Harris)
In no particular order:
Atlas Shrugged--Ayn Rand
A Prayer for Owen Meany--John Irving
A Map of the World--Jane Hamilton
The Wizard's Tide--Frederick Buechner
Banner in the Sky--James Ramsey Ullman
Only read one of them.
John Irving just hasn't been himself the last 10 years.
If I had to chose a John Irving book with a life lesson in it, I think "The World According to Garp" would be it. Serious cringe factor.
1. Owen Meaney
2. Cider House Rules
3. Garp
in that order.
Dick and Jane
Ralph Waldo Emerson's 'self reliance' changed my beliefs... it made me realize that I don't owe anyone else anything.
I would agree, both with your order, and that he hasn't been the same. I think the most recent of his books that I've read is Son of the Circus--that was just too weird.
Of the books on my list, perhaps the last "Banner in the Sky" has ultimately had the most influence (though not on morals or beliefs) of any one book. While not a masterwork of fiction (it's a book about a 16 year old climbing a mountain that I read when I was probably in 5th or 6th grade), it gave a kid growing up in Buffalo, NY who had never really seen a mountain before a love of the mountains that has never waned.
Whatever happend to Green Eggs and Ham? That one always comes up but not on this thread.
What gives? Has Dr. Seuss fallen out of favor with you cocksuckers?
Out.
All of the Frog and Toad stories. Were they gay?
