High schooler has a personal massage therapist and can't event travel to one meet without him? Good grief, no thanks.

She should get the Gaiam muscle roller for $19.95 at Whole Foods. Works like a charm and should get her through the event.

$7,500 to get to Eugene? Is she trying to fly them first class and renting them a mansion when she's there? Seems like more than twice the amount she should need to have both of those people there.

I don't follow Kate Murphy and I don't know where these people are from, but couldn't they just drive there, bring a tent, and then stay at a local campground? They could probably do what they need to do for two or three thousand.

Even less that that, if you are smart you could get to Eugene and back with a few people for less than 500 dollars

You're not getting back and forth from Virginia to Eugene with a few people for 500 bucks.

But having the long time coach of a rival area high school as your own "personal massage therapist" is a bit off the reservation.

Perhaps if you had an electric car with those free charging stations mapped out, and pitched a tent in the wilderness, and didn't eat at expensive restaurants, then it could be done. But yeah I agree that conventional travel won't get you there and back with 500 bucks especially since an athlete costs more money than an average person just to take care of their health.

Correct, and closer to $500 than $7500. Even if they fly. We are only talking about 2 people.

Don't forget that gofundme takes 8% off the top so maybe they figured that in. Also, flights to Portland, rental car, hotels and food add up. Check hotel prices, probably $500 a night for shit hotels. They could camp, etc but with an athlete that young you probably want the coach to stay in the same hotel just for comfort sake.

You must be a real piece of work to try and take the glory on this topic from the original poster. Kate Murphy and her coaches should be applauded for their success so far, and I hope they reach and exceed their goal. Knowing the NoVA community, they will.

$7500 does seem like a lot.

You can fly DC to Portland for $500. But lets's say its $750.

$750x2 = $1500

I see you can get an AirBNB for the full trials for $300 a night. They don't need to be out there all 10 days but even if they were that's $3000.

$4500. Got to get a car. $500. That's $5000. Massage guy has to get paid too.

But if they only need to be out there say 5 days knock $1500 off this. So $3500 + fees for massage guy.

8% of $7,500 is only $600. I also did a quick Airbnb search which netted me multiple places to stay for less than $150/night during the OT dates. Also a number of house rentals for $200ish/night. Like I said $7,500 is way too much no matter how you slice it.

One more point, next time her and others should consider using

YouCaring.com instead of GoFundme.com. GoFundme.com takes 5% off the top on top of credit card fees. So $375 goes to GoFundMe if she raises the $7500.

5% for them plus another 3% to cover fees. Not to mention, it is a possible tax implication if you raise enough and then have it deposited into your account. This could be seen as income that must be reported and you must be accountable for in April.

I think this would be a taxable gift, but I'm pretty sure the yearly limit is $14,000 so they'd be ok on that front.

$5 Subway footlong. Or if you get an airbnb place you can get regular food from the grocery store and totally avoid restaurants.

They probably want us to cover their time off work. These guys are adults, they can pay for their own vacations.
