I think it's great they've started a GoFundMe for her to have someone she wants to travel to Eugene with her.

I'm pretty certain that athletes get funding to go, but does the coach, trainer, massage therapist, people who know each athlete inside and out get funding to go? No.

If you've made the Olympic Standard, you want to take your A game.

Plenty of stories like Kate's....although in this case it's trying to help bring out the family of unsponsored post-collegiate 1500m runner Brandon Hudgins. Brandon's overcome a rare autoimmune disease that nearly took his life as an undergraduate student (http://www.runnersworld.com/elite-runners/runner-overcomes-rare-disease-to-break-400-mile). 4:16 1600 PR in HS, 3:46.8 1500m in college at Appalachian State as a grad student, and now has gone 3:38.2 after training on his own for the past 5 years since finishing his master's. The Brian Sell (minus the sponsorship deal!) of middle distance running!

It does seem a little over-the-top for a high schooler to bring such a large entourage. It's her choice, of course, but I don't think she should expect other people to pay for them.

Coaches routinely travel all over the bloody place on their own dime. I'll probably go to Sacramento next month as will hundreds of other youth coaches. I don't expect any handouts, we coach because we like to do it.

She has no shot of making the team. Why spend all that money for her massage therapist??? She should just enjoy the experience.

Why does a high school kid need a personal massage therapist? How many Kenyan junior athletes even have food to eat let alone a friggen team of professionals pandering to their every need.
