The world's first-ever track and field draft is tonight at 8 pm ET - Who would you take #1?

What's the meet schedule like? Are there relays? How are meets scored?

With a short meet, I'd say you have to focus on sprinters. A 100m, 200m, 4X100 triple goes a lot farther than having a guy who can run either the 5K or 10K, but who probably won't be able to run both very effectively.

Gatlin. Obviously great over 100/200 and relays, and was a 110h stud in college as well.

I don't know who you draft but the quotes from Gatlin support my view that rather than race on a track that their should be interesting races. Like the Vegas strip. How about a race from one end of the high line to the other in new York? Or from empire state to the public library. Capitol to Washington monument. That sort of stuff.

Doubtful that Jager would ever run a steeplechase in this third world "track league". There is nothing to be gained from it.

Too many unknowns to make any projections. Need to know the meet format, and which athletes have declared for the draft. If they really wanted to create a following for this concept, they should have published this information before the draft. I also wonder if any Olympic hopefuls would declare this year with the first meet right before the Olympics - but maybe they would skip it and participate in later meets. They will get some good athletes, but I doubt they get any top tier athletes like Centro, Rupp, Jager, Simpson, or Rowbury.

Just picking who you want seems stupid if they have not said they are willing to participate.

I would assume the 4 mile road race has a all-comers run with meet tickets attached but will the sweaty folks actually stay around for the meet? Road race joggers are not guaranteed T&F meet fans.

I missed the USATF combine?

Agree, how can we get excited when they haven't even explain who will be making the picks. Are there going to be 4 "team owners" taking turns making picks? Or is one guy in Eugene going to pick for everyone? And what does it mean that 16 of the 36 on each team will be drafted, with the remaining 20 coming from free agency? Will the "team owner" have to individually negotiate a big contract with those athletes? I have no idea what is going on.

They have announced that several hundred athletes have preregistered for the draft. They've had several weeks to register. I haven't seen the list of names, though.

No one seems to know anything about this event. Marketing fail before it has even started.
