I need some help with a HS kid I'm coaching. Here is his background: Last 4 years we have built up the base mileage over the summer(avg. 80+ miles per week this past summer broken down into 30 min easy AM/60 min PM), then kept the mileage up during cross country season(60-80 off 4 doubles a week, NO anaerobic intervals, only long intervals(20 x 400m @75-80sec w/60sec recovery, 5 x 1000m @3:05-3:10 w/2:30-3min recovery, 6 x mile @ 5:20 w/3:00 min recovery) once per week and a 20-25 min tempo(~5:40pace) OR fartlek(6 x 3 min med/hard) as our other workout. We alternate weeks of long runs(one Sunday we go 60-70min, the next Sunday we go 90-120), and our long runs are very easy(7:30+). Last summer was his best summer ever, as he stayed right around 90 miles a week for 3 weeks straight during late July. However, his racing was weak at best. We don't over race either(6 cross races, which is minimal in HS). His PR from his Junior year was 16:15 for a legitimate 5k cross country course. At the same race this year, our last race of the season, he ran 16:09. I know this time is better, but he didn't appear to be the same runner. He loves to run and enjoys the sport, but he just doesn't seem to compete to the best of his ability. I know it bothers him, and it also kills me to see this kid racing slower than we both know he could. Last season he ran 10:00.xx for 3200m three times in large invitational fields(where the winning times were well under 9:40) before he ran 9:54 in a dual meet where he ran alone the whole way. He runs very well in workouts, but when it is time to race he seems to underachieve. Does anyone have any advice on how I can help this kid race better? Are we doing something in our training that is leading to bad racing performances? If you need any other info about how we train, just ask, as I will respond ASAP.
