I have the opportunity to take a 10 day trip to Turkey over spring break. It is thru a local college & I really want to go. My whole life I have had the opportunity to go to cool places and then rationalize why I shouldn't go and end up regretting it. My wife was a flight attendent and all I have to show for it is multiple Vegas & lame Mexico trips.

What I've read claims that despite being in the Middle East Turkey is as safe as any major US City. I have pretty much decided on going and have to make a decision this week. I would apreciate some sound reasons from anyone on why I should or should not go.

Go.

I went with my wife for two weeks during the summer of 2001 and it was the best trip of my life. One week in Istanbul and then we flew down to Bodrum and spent a week on a small boat with just us and 3 other couples sailing between coves in the Aegean Sea.

It might be as safe as any US city, but it is different, so you do have to be careful. The overwelming majority of people there are the friendliest people you will ever meet, but be careful with your money and be prepared to haggle during every transaction.

Didn't do much running while I was there, but walked all over Istanbul the first week and swam the whole second week.

Go. I lived there for three years and loved it.

The great majority of the people are friendly and honest. Istanbul has more folks looking to take advantage of you, but otherwise it's a wonderful place.

Running is very much a developing sport and usually best not done in the city (Turks drive much more creativley and aggressively than we do). But go to Cappadochia and you can find some wonderful hill country as well as fascinating history and culture (and very cheap accomodations).

The overnight trains are fun and reasonable, and you can have your own compartment for perhaps $40 (single) and enjoy the clicking of the tracks as you nod off.

Just take your favorite stomach medicine (Peptobismal) as this kind of illness is quite common, almost expected if you live there for any amount of time.

Turkey isn't in the Middle East.
