Noticed on the Oslo start lists that the older Ingebrigtsen brothers are in the Dream Mile and 15-year-old Jakob is in the national mile with a new PR of 3:44.97 that he set last week. He also ran 1:52.05 last month.
Has an American 15-year-old (he would have finished his freshman or sophomore year in HS) ever run a 4:02.xx mile or the equivalent? I can't find anything close to that, this kid looks unreal.
That's super impressive!
However, most of the best H.S. distance runners I coached had obvious natural talent, but no running background prior to H.S. They would barely break 5 minutes as a freshman, but they would come back and run 4:30x as sophomore and 4:15 as a junior. I've had kids with an extensive running background who would run 4:30x as freshman, 4:20 as a sophomore and 4:15 as a junior. (You get the point!)
There is no doubt that if you are running 50mpw at age at the youth level, you are going to run very fast at a young age, but your margin for improvement is smaller.
