Teare's a junior, and this was his 4th time under 9:00 this year. Pretty rare for a top-level guy to go to the well that many times these days.
Isaac Cortes won that 1600. He also won the 800 with a another blazing kick. This guy has amazing future potential.

Yup. Won going away with a strong looking negative split.
1 Isaac Cortes 12 Great Oak 1:50.75 10
55.766 (55.766) 1:50.743 (54.977)
Probably a 1:49/4:02y guy right now.
Anyone know what the GO guys are doing at NBON?
Can you imagine being in high school at a non-national meet and going through the 1200 on the shoulder of the leader Ina very respectable 3:08 split then dropping a 57 last lap (finishing in a very solid 4:06) You would expect to win with that - easy. But for Spencer Dodds that was only good enough for 5th at state this year. Insane.
And not to mention Tamagno wasn't there because he chose to run at Pre
Tamagno WOULDVE wiped the floor with cortes and everyone else in the race. He's run a 4:01 mile and converted that's good for a 3:59 1600. Second greatest miler in california all time

While Tamagno certainly is the better miler I'm not so sure he would have beaten Cortes. If Tamagno let it be "tactical" going through in 3:08 do you really think he could have closed faster than Cortes in 55!!?? I don't know.
Also Cortes is a better 800 runner. He negative split a 1:50 after that 4:04, which tells me he's a 1:48 guy most likely.

Cortez can run sub 4, and would definitely beat Tamagno.

The optimizer says 3:59 1600 yesterday, and then a neg split 1:50 as the second race? A sub 4 miler now likely.
If he can run a sub 4 and beat tamagno, why hasn't he?
A 4:04 1600 and a sub 4 mile are very different. His fastest mile is a 4:08 which is no where near Tamagno's 4:01 mile and 3:59 1600. So there's your data.

Austin is that you?

They only raced once this year at the Azusa meet. Cortes had a bad day with a 4:09. Aside from that, they haven't been in a single race together
"Bad day." Since he had a bad day it must mean aside from that Cortes is just an overall better runner from top to bottom right

Not true. It means that if they would have another race, particularly around now, the result would be much closer. Especially in the 1600 last night
That 800 was insane with 300 to go Cortes was in LAST. If Tamagno was in that particular 1600 yesterday there's no way he could of out kicked Cortes.

Nothing against Cortes. Huge races for him. But no, he's a 1:50 / 4:04 (1600) guy right now.
I've never understood the logic to claim a runner is faster than a race they just ran. And fwiw, these 2 CIF state races were within a split second of his PR, but neither was a PR.
Again, nothing against Cortes. Great races. 2x state champion in the most competitive state in the country. Expect great things.
