Easy, I'm not bashing Wisco (though I am a CU fan)! I was at the race and I was as surprised as anyone that Wisco did not win, and even more surprised that CU did. All I am saying is that Wetmore had a great strategy for his boys on that day, one that I think would have benefited Solinsky and Tegenkamp (though I realize that all 3, Bairu included, had aspirations and expectations of winning). If they would have laid off the pace maybe 2 seconds/mile in the first 2 miles I think it would have made a HUGE difference late in the race! Teg and Solinsky were "out the back door" the last 2k while Vaughn and Schoolie were "rolling," along with Sev and Pipher.
Wisco was probably the better team, and should have won, but as all sports fans know - the best team does not always win! LCU was the best team on that day! I realize that it can't all be blamed on Teg and Solinsky, Lockhart and Spiker (or was it Nelson, I can't remember) didn't run to their potential either. Additionally, Wetmore outcoached Schumaker! I know for a fact that the Badgers braintrust wasn't even figuring CU into the mix ( I have a close relative who is a Wisco alum and remains very close with Jerry and others).
The fact that Wisco had 3 guys with individual title aspirations might have actually hurt them. If they had run more like Stanford the past two years then they undoubtedly would have won the team title, but probably would not have had the individual champion!
Just my two cents worth!
