I was not drafted. I went into the Navy after OCS and did special forces (not SEAL) stuff for 2 years and 7 moths in SE Asia (not always in Vietnam). I came off active duty and started professional school at a relatively conservative, nominally Catholic university. When I started back to school I still had a year of active reserve commitment and had to go to classes in uniform once a month on the Friday of my drill weekend to make it to my drill on time. From my personal experience being on a college campus in uniform in the early 70s was a very unpleasant experience. Students I didn't even know and who didn't know me (and some professors) said some very unpleasant things to me and spontaneously called me some very unpleasant names. My experience was that the media / pop culture has not overblown at all the vitriol that anti-war protestors had towards soldiers returning to the US in the 60-70s

What reserve unit were you in that had a Friday night drill?

In the first draft everyone who turned 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 and 26 in 1969 were subjected to the draft. There was also an oldest first clause, which meant that all of the 26 year olds were selected first, then 25 year olds, on down the line.
But it's PBS, a left wing taxpayer subsidized propaganda show. What do you expect?

The first draft? In 1942? What first draft are you talking about? I had to register for the draft when I turned 18 and would have been eligible immediately had I not had a student deferment. For those with no deferments it was up to the local draft board to decide who was and wasn't called. That was the case for all of us before the lottery was instituted. Once the lottery was instituted you had a year when you be called if they got to your number. After that you were still eligible until you were 26 but would only be called if everyone from the current year's lottery had been drafted.
