Second bad result in a row (13:40 at Payton Jordan). This one actually seems worse. Really not looking good. 10k best is from 2012 (still in college). I know he was hurt, but is this the point when we have to say he's not coming back?

He now reminds me of Brent Vaughn, just nothing left in the tank. He is running times of a good DII runner. I hope there is a reason for this and he can come back.

If the trials weren't coming up soon I highly doubt he'd be trying to race right now.

Any bets that Nike will pull some strings to get him in the trials? He does not have a 10k qualifier.
He now has to run the 10k at Portland for a sub 28:15. That means the trials would be his 3rd 10k in 5 weeks.
As recently as January this board had him on the short list of favorites to make the Olympic Marathon Team.
That's because this board consists primarily of anti-Rupp shills who hope and pray some so-called 'blue-collar' honky will take down Rupp.

Seems like a desperate last ditch effort to make the trials standard. Otherwise why would his coach let him run this race? They had to know he wasn't in good shape. He runs with those BTC guys daily.
Wonder if his Achilles is still an issue. Didn't he say at one point he had to change his training and limit mileage to 90 mpw with limited speed work? Not the recipe for sustained success, especially for a strength/endurance based runner.
In hindsight the start of his decline can be traced back to world cross last year. High expectations going in but underperformed due to injury.
Starting to remind me of Solinsky's career post hamstring injury. Came back in fits and starts with limited success and multiple weak performances by his standards.
Sad to see. Thought he had potential to run sub 27 but the fact remains that his 10k PR is 4 years old.

Tough to watch.
I also pegged Derrick as the next Alberto Salazar. They have similar running styles and both lack that kick necessary for track success, but must be a significant injury for Derrick to have removed so much fitness.
Best wishes. Thankfully, he is still very young and should move to the roads and get healthy and out of spikes for the sake of his Achilles.

Bummer. When I first saw the results I thought Derrick ran 27:38 and finished back because the race was deep. Hopefully just a rough day.
