A lot of ultra marathoners can't run fast marathons. Jurek has pr of 2:29.

HRE beat me to it. McGrady owned the 600 and frustrated the hell out of Lee Evans, who was the first man to run under 44 in the 400. They had many battles over 600 yards and McGrady won most if not all.
Not sure what he could have done over other distances, but Wilson Kipketer seems to have done pretty much just 800s.

SEB COE? Are you kidding me? He is arguably the greatest 800 meter runner of all time, and he won TWO OLYMPIC GOLDS AT AN EVENT THAT WASN'T HIS BEST... and he has the worst range of all time?
Only on Letsrun. The 800m/1500m/mile world record holder who won Olympic medals at has the worst range of all time...
I think Rudisha has pretty poor range. His 400m is similar to what a decathlete might run and he has no listed 1500m.
Jeremy Wariner comes to mind.... one of the best ever at 400 but barley dipped below 20.2 and his 800 debut was underwhelming considering how smooth and easy of a runner he is
also the man directly ahead of him on the all time list Harry Reynolds has a 500 time of 60.8 and the man below him Van Niekerk has arguably the best range of any sprinter ever

Evans beat him twice.
I would back the nick symmonds claim.
I'm a little late but this is an easy one. The
GE 30" Free-Standing self cleaning range.
This thing couldn't boil water on the sun.
Nico Motchebon (1:43.91 + 5th at the OG).
His 400m PB is good: 46.71. But that's what you really would expect as absolute minimum from a 800m guy with same running style and physique then Alberto Juantorena.
1000m PB: 2:20
1500m PB: 3:52
And I really doubt he could have bettered 3:42 (probably even 3:45 - I saw him running over 1500m), even when concentrating for long time for the distance.

What about Roger Bannister, all his training was geared specifically for a mile and he ran only about 20-30 miles a week. He probably could pop off a solid 800-3k but after that it would all fall apart.
He was 4th in 1500m in Olympics. (3:43.8 PB) If that does not count as a separate distance, his 800m PB was 1:50:7.
http://www.all-athletics.com/node/293084Wilson Kipketer is the WROAT among WR-holders at Oly distances. 3:42 for 1500 and 46.85 for 400.
