I ran all of the distance races through a pace optimizer to calculate everyone's true ability that day. Some people are really leaving a lot of energy out there as you'll see.

That was my pr (ran it once that season, was an 800m runner). I really went for broke through 1200m, just trying to hang on as long as possible, since I wasn't sure my fitness level. Obviously I went out a little too hard. I've always thought I was about 4:00 shape.
That was freshman year of college and I never ran a 1500 or mile again.

Interesting concept. But when I look at the women's 1500m section 1, what I see, all the way down the line, is adjustments to times that range from extremely optimistic to flat out fantasy in relation to the capabilities of the runners.
When I check the lap splits for the race, this perception is confirmed by the experienced-based intuition that you are imputing too much of an improvement from actual race pace to hypothetical steady pace.
Plz include Ella Donaghu, HS distance phenom and Stanford recruit, in your calculations.

Well....good science > "experienced-based intuition" :p
For example, this runner ran a 1500m in 3:34.18 with these splits:
38.97, 53.28, 61.51, 60.42
The optimizer shows that person could have run 3:26.89. Is that really "extremely optimistic" or "flat out fantasy" in relation to the capabilities of that runner?
Yeah I was thinking that some of the guys in the 2nd and 3rd heats of the 5k ran really poorly paced races. For some reason both heats had very fast splits for 600m-1000m. A lot of guys ran 62-63 for that 400 split, and I even saw one guy with a 61. I also saw Sambu went out in 28 for the first 200 only to slow all the way down to 68 on his 3rd lap
Good start, but this calculator doesn't take into account the benefits gained through drafting off of runners in front of you, the changing wind velocity and direction during the race, as well as ignoring the fact that during the race not every lap is actually covered by running exactly 400 meters. (For example, a runner may run on the outside of lane 1 for the first lap due to traffic before being able to move into the inside of lane 1 for subsequent laps, he would then run a few meters more to cover that first lap)

Is there any way to convince the letsrun owners to add this feature to their post commands? Is there a list of commands somewhere? I thought this might be BBcode but doesn't look like it.
