Mead, who was on last year's Beijing 10k team, ran 7:38 indoors to beat Lagat in Feb .
Kipchirchir, also on last year's Beijing 10k team, won the 5000m last night (13:18, :55 close).
Rupp is Rupp.
A few others could be in mix as well.
Having the Olympic standard plays into Lagat's hands now. All he has to do is hope for a slower race, and then utilize his still effective kick. Yea maybe he lost in a 7:38 race, however that is a lot different than a 28 10k.
I also wonder how much Lagat would be "in the heads" of all those runners that haven't made the Olympics or WC? Surely the mental game would be in favor of Lagat.
A multiple championship medal winner who is 41 yo and still kicking ass.....he will be "in the heads" of everyone who toes the line. Very similar to Meb. Would love to see him in the 10K, personally and think he would make the team.. Would be a great race with the amount of people who have to make an Olympic qual time. Do you go for place AND time at trials? Would anyone take it out in a flat out attempt at place and time? Would it be a straight sit and kick thinking to go for place and then qual time later?
Unless it's Rupp sitting and kicking. Then it's the f'cking crime of the century.
This. Also nice anecdote from rjm33.

drew hunter isn't genetically perfect as a runner like Lagat is.
sure, he doesn't extend himself in workouts and such, but he's also capable of running a 7:37 last 3k of a 5k. 3:57 last mile. he could close a 1500m in 51 seconds. silver medal. 2nd fastest 1500m of all time, on and on
look at his body, his legs. he's gifted more than almost anyone before him. ever. his talent is rare so don't base anything you do on what he does. he's an outlier and treat to watch and once-in-a-lifetime athlete.
he ran a 3:55 mile at age 41

He's not setting down incredible workout times--not at least in any I've heard of--but he stays healthy, doesn't break himself down, and so keeps it rolling. That's right, it reminds me a bit of Tinman's training of Hunter, who does a lot of 10k pace work, rather than mile pace, though Hunter goes a lot easier on recovery days.
