Wow, skinnier vegans. Just wow. Controlled for age? For activity level? For genetic profile? NO. Also skinnier is not necessarily healthier. Usain Bolt has a higher BMI than an anorexic, self-harming vegan girl.
Correlation is not causation.
Eat a balanced diet without excluding foods that humans have eaten healthily for millenia. Adjust in the direction that seems to support your lifestyle. Some people are more carb-tolerant, might even be healthy as vegans. Others are carb-intolerant, and must avoid starches and sugars. Listen to your body and balance diet, sleep and training. Health is not an agenda, it is a state of being.
I would hypothesize that it has more to do with the type of person that becomes a vegan or vegetarian than the inclusion of meat. Most people become vegan because they are concerned with healthy eating, which includes being aware of calorie consumption.

The ancestors of Pandas were carnivores, but they would get sick and die eating only meat today. The ancestors of whales and dolphins ate grass for 100 million years. Species adapt.2 million years is plenty of time for evolutionary adaptation. 20-50 years (popularity of vegetarian/vegan fads) is not. You can't fight your biology without a cost. If you are willing to compromise your health for moral reasons, help yourself. Whole food vegan is still far better than the Standard American Diet, just not optimal for most, especially athletes.

What do you think is "optimal for most, especially athletes" then? I'm very close to vegan: the foods I consume while at home are vegan, but when away from home will allow myself some dairy or, less often, eggs, otherwise I may go hungry or incur expense I cannot afford (I'm a student).
