5K training is not very different from 10K training unless you coming from 1500m. Kipchoge surely wasn't. 26:40 back then. On the day of the marathon, 27:30. With proper 10K preparations. 27 flat.

eh ???
have you seen clockings of some other elite 5k guys who tried to run 10k off 5k training ???
how about isiah who has 12'48pb & tried a 10k later that year & bombed to 27'17 !!!???
how come his 5k training coudn't let him run anywhere near same calibre 10k ???
eliud was also a 5k/3k/1500 guy as had 3'33+pb & that 3'33 was early season run in hengelo with unlikely great pacers, probably capable of 3'31/3'32 if it had some proper pacing in elite meet in summer
no one expected any great shakes from eliud in that hengelo run but 26'49 off jog to 9k was stupendous
learn to read details of race : they were on 27-flat pace at 9k which is ~ 2'42 average to 9k
the last km he ran ~ 2'31 !!!
fantastic effort in his debut off just 5k training as he didn't attempt to qualify for a major 10k until ~ 5y later
even-pace from gun at much faster pace to 9k so that no 2'31 left in him for last 1k but more like a 2'40 & he wouda run
~ 26'35 / 26'40
on sunday, he wouda murdered that time
2"03-flat on that slow course in cold weather ( 45F is not temperature kenyans want to run in ) with slowing tactical duel near end with biwott, cannot be run without fantastic intrinsic 10k speed
carlos lopes probably had 27'20/27'30 speed when he ran 2"07+wr decades ago
eliud woud have no quicker 10k speed when over 4'00 quicker at M ???
'Asbel shoud be hugely disappointed if he doesn't go 1'41+ this year as in best shape of life & running far more aggressively than ever
in fact, he is a genuine threat to the 800WR'
Right he only has to improve by nearly 20m to do that!
He won't break 1:42 for 800m.
Kipchoge would gain a lot more acclaim for beating Mo in the 10,000m than winning the marathon in Rio (which the general public will scarcely notice). So why does he not run it?
you clearly didn't see his '14 thumping of nijel when in 3'28+ shape, when he ran 1'43.3 with ~ 6m extra wide on bends & easing off at finishall this off jog of a startletsrun correspondent thinks the guy he beat last year, managanoi is currently in 1'42+ shape, so what does that make Asbel who is quite clearly the big fry there ?http://www.letsrun.com/news/2016/04/asbel-kiprop-elijah-manangoi-vincent-yator-put-show-2016-kenyan-police-championships/
It makes Asbel in 3:26 shape. He beat him at the 1500

all this off jog of a start
------------------------------------------------------------------
He always likes to start off slow and run wide, I can't see that changing. If he did I still don't think he will break 1:42 - talk of a WR is ridiculous

Perhaps Managanoi has improved, either way that does not mean Kiprop is going sub 1:42
see above when Asbel was capable of ~ 1'42-flat in 3'28+ shape
mandingo has almost certainly improved as still getting used to big time, but no one woud believe he is Asbel's match at 800 or 1500
they both ran seprate heats at eldoret coupla weeks ago :
mandingo : 1'46 with -ve split 54/52, probably worth ~ 1'44-high off 2s +ve splits
Asbel : 1'44.6 with some wide running to overtake leader on 3rd bend, probably worth ~ 1'44-low if route-1
i'd suggest the gap between them over 800 currently is ~ 0.5s which you can subtract from mandingo's 1'42+ current shape
'that was in '14 when he only ran 3'28+'
When does the reality of what someone actually run ever come into your calculations.
Your comment about Kiprop setting the WR for 800m is laughable
Souleiman is better at the 800 than Kiprop! He is more of an 800m guy.
To use your insane terminology, Souleiman is 800/1500 and Kiprop 1500/800
Metric Miler wrote:Souleiman is better at the 800 than Kiprop!
i doubt it, despite Souly being in intrinsic
~ 1'41.5
He is more of an 800m guy
no
he only took up 800 in '13
he won bronze same year & in intrinsic 1'41.5 shape within 3y !!!
To use your insane terminology, Souleiman is 800/1500
no
he is 1500 runner running 800 :
1500/800
and Kiprop 1500/800
correct
now, consider, Souly was likely ~ 1'41.5 shape here in eugene, what shape was Asbel in considering huge wide running he did to the bell !!!
then consider how much he made up on Souly wide on last lap !!!
