If you can only hit one standard one time, are you still a non-hobbiest?
I have no problem with the times, I just think you should have run under a majority of the standards, multiple times, in order to meet a random poster definition of status.
Of course, a time cut-off for the hobby jogger designation is stupid. Might as well make a mileage per week standard; or a time spent running per week standard.
Are you going to age grade this?
I've hit all of the times from 800 - 10,000 and never have raced further.
In my thirties I missed that one mile time by one second, the 5K time by 15 seconds but did hit the 10K time.
Haven't hit any of those times in my forties.
I guess I do feel like a bit of a hobby jogger now as I don't log any of my runs but I'm in around 18 and change 5K fitness.
If I ran once in the Olympic Trials does that permanently exempt me from hobby jogger status even if I decide to just jog now and then?

Let's end the discussion ONCE AND FOR ALL about who qualifies for Hobby Jogger status and who escapes that title.
Universal NOT HOBBY JOGGER Qualification times to BEAT (i.e., run faster than, under, or Sub) for MALE RUNNERS:
800m--2:00.00
1600m--4:30.00
3200m--10:00.00
5000m--16:00.00
10000m--35:00.00
Half marathon--1:20:00.00
Marathon--2:45:00.00
If your time in ANY of the above events is FASTER than ANY of the times stated above in your distance of preference, Congratulations, you are not a Hobby Jogger.
If your time in ALL of the above events is SLOWER than ALL of the times stated above, you are slower than a stampede of turtles running through molasses with glue on their feet.
This is so utterly narrow-minded. What if the person took up running at age 43?
Then they should be mature enough to not worry about things like this.
They should simply lurk in the background and take in as entertainment what the young kids who need things like this to establish their self-worth are doing.
Wrong. 2:00 is not HARD to break is you have any kind of speed at all.
-------------------------------------------------------
Few people have any kind of speed at all and if they are a sprinter then they will still struggle to break 2
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 5k and 10k times are pretty equal speed wise if you double the 5k time and add 30 seconds to each mile which adds another 3 minutes.
-----------------------------------------
Your version is way out its more like 10 seconds per mile at that pace.
Everyone on here is saying your times are way out

Good response. Usually, I do as you have indicated, but this time I just had to reply.
What if someone IS a hobby jogger? I mean, what are we supposed to do? Shun the person?

First of all, if you talk about a 1600m or 3200m PR as opposed to 1500, Mile, 3k or 2 Mile you are a hobby jogger.
Also, if you run a half marathon and talk about it as anything other than a build up race you are a hobby jogger.
I am picking 750+ points per IAAF tables as the level required to no longer be a hobby jogger (as a male). It's pretty obvious from this that the OP has sh*t for endurance.
800 - 2:00.80
Mile - 4:28.82
2 Miles - 9:38.17
5000 - 15:20.40
10000 - 32:33.63
HM - 1:11:48
Marathon - 2:35:33
Women's if anyone is interested
800m - 2:25.17
Mile - 5;26.27
2 Mile - 11:46.63
5000 - 18:56.55
10000 - 40:06.95
HM - 1:28:10
Mar - 3:12:52
Is "real" runner status entirely contingent upon current fitness? What if you used to be able to hit all of those times easily, but can no longer do so due to injury or laziness?

This is one of the stupidest things anyone on this site has ever posted.
Call it within 1 minute per mile of the world record in a particular event

Pretty bold statement, I've seen some incredibly stupid things posted here; I have a hard time trying to decide if some of the posters are intentionally trolling or truly ignorant.
I am old, so I will go by the All American standards. They look pretty soft but so is my belly these days.

YOU are a hobby jogger as you cant even post times that are equivalent one from the other....
Interesting approach, but I don't think those times equate to one another very well. Looking at Daniels' VDOT tables, the 10k is soft relative to the 5k and the marathon is soft relative to the half marathon. 2 mile is a little soft too. My personal experience leads me to lean with the times established by the VDOT tables. They are below for the mile up, using 4:28 as the baseline. I am not suggesting that I agree with these standards as a line of demarcation. I am just suggesting a set of times that many might agree are equivalents of a 4:28 mile.
Mile - 4:28
3000 - 8:51
2 mile - 9:33
5000 - 15:23
10000 - 31:57
Half - 1:10:30
Marathon - 2:27:38

Yeah, HSers can break 2:00 for the 800. But they can break 31:00 for the 10K...which is more than 30 seconds per mile faster than the 35:00 mentioned by the OP.
Yes, hobby jogging HSers can break 2 for the 800. Only serious and talented HSers can break 31 for the 10k. I was a 4:09, 14:50 guy and I can assure you I would NOT have broken 31 for the 10k in HS.
I like this. It's easy to calculate and can be applied to men, women, masters runners, handicapped athletes, etc. Though it does get tougher as the distances get longer (2:11 800 to 2:29 marathon). I suppose using a percentage, like within 25% of the world record, would make all the times equivalently easy/difficult.
