I ran a 5K yesterday and noticed in the results that an 8-year old girl ran 18:55. Does anyone know if that's a record?

Nevermind, the same girl ran 18:15 a few weeks ago. That's gotta be a record though right?
Guys in my high school ran 18:55 all the time. Cut was no big deal.
Which race? Certified?
That is superfast for an 8 year old. I don't know the record, but I am pretty sure someone has run faster than that. Btw, fast 5K times don't mean a whole lot because the most talented kids usually don't go all out except in the 800/mile. Those kids might jump into a couple of 5Ks, but they usually aren't pushing themselves like they would in a race against other kids. Again, 18:55 is very fast, but I would not read too much into this because little girls are naturally aerobic and fearless. When I was a club coach, my 11-12 year old girls could beat most of the H.S. girls they trained with. I am always interested in how young girls do in the 800/mile and youth XC. Btw, prepare yourself for a lot of negative comments about your daughter running road races. Personally, I think road races are find for little kids if they enjoy them, can do them off of appropriate 800/mile type training and don't take the results too serious. You should look into some local AAU or USATF youth competitions, where your daughter can make new friends and see how she stacks up against kids her own age. - Good luck
Seems like she is slowing...faster as a 7 year old:

No, according to her Athlinks profile, she ran 18:15 a couple of weeks ago. Also, she's run a 4:18 mile! Gotta question the accuracy of the course on that one.
https://www.athlinks.com/Athletes/193486134No way has she run a 4:18 mile at 8 years old, that would put her in the top 15 all time for women!!! Clearly an administrative error.

Jealous much?
Did she hit all the timing mats?
4:18? I'd bet my life that that's incorrect. The women's world record is 4:12. Maybe they meant 5:18 or 6:18.
Maybe an adult male running under her identity?

She ran a 4:26 mile at Fontana day mile race too supposedly

I agree w/this pretty much, but what is "appropriate 800/mile type training?" I'm not a fan of structured training at this age, especially for girls, but relaxed easy running a couple times a week and maybe some low-key striders/sprint work is probably acceptable.

Running is a sport, I would expect a kid to practice running in the same way they practice playing soccer, basketball or any other sport. With that said, there is a limit to how much an 8 year should practice any sport, but I would not expect a kid's track practice to be any less structured than any other sport.

You are right -- it was not a mile -- it was a 1600.
Interesting to note that she's run in 72 reported races in a little over 2 years. That's got to be a record for a kid her age. She's the Michael Wardian of children's running. Hopefully she's enjoying it.

I don't know about the other 5k courses she has run, but this 18:28 was on a USATF certified course.
As for the 4:18 "mile" in 2015 -- and a 4:26 the year before -- both at Fontana Days, their 2015 fb page described it as a "kids half mile dash." So, along with all the other obvious reasons it was not a mile, here is another reason.
I hope this discrepancy between the Athlinks data and the Fontana Days web site's information does not set off a 20,000+ post thread outing this grade-schooler as the world's youngest distance running cheater.

Are you advocating interval training? I know there is a lot of trolling here, but it's a serious question. I am not a big fan of serious training for girls until age 13 or so. I'd rather they be multi-sport athletes. The girls who are injured on my daughter's soccer tm are the ones who only play soccer and nothing else. I would fear the same thing with just running, especially hard running at this age.
