3/22 update: The Armory announced that they will give $1000 to the fastest male team, fastest female team, and fastest mixed gender marathon realy team.
The prize money likely will go to 8 person teams but is open to all the teams racing.
The "marathon on a track" was quite popular at the turn of the 20th century with packed houses watching match marathons in Madison Square Garden.
(If you're a NY Times subscriber you have to read this article about the 1908 match race marathon in the Garden decided by less than half a lap with a near riot breaking out in the stands and everyone smoking

Recently marathons on the track have existed but at not very popular venues. It has mainly become a LetsRun.com meme.
That all changes the weekend of April 8-10 with the Armory NYC Indoor Marathon and marathon relay.
Individuals can race. There is prize money of $1000, $750, and $500 in the individual race with a $5000 bonus if the winner breaks the indoors world record of 2:27:21 for men and 2:53:53 for women.
And the more interesting angle for at least myself (or the slightly less crazy amongst us) are the marathon relays. You can have a team of 2, 4,
6 (update: we left out 6)
or 8 people. You can run any distance you want. The only catch is each runner can run a max of 3 times.
If you're looking for a different reason to go to New York City next month this is it.
All the info on the races including an FAQ and how to register is here:

Essentially you sign up, pick the time slot you want to run, and pay your fee. Multiple indoor marathons will be run all weekend with 3-5 hour windows. And yes you can run on multiple teams if you want (as long as they are not during the same window).

I wonder how fast the fastest 8 man team will go. Dennis Kimetto I bet goes faster. I'm also curious about the best way for 2, 4 and 8 man teams to pace this. The few the number of people on the team the more advantageous it might be to run longer the first time you run. If any of you have signed up and want to talk strategy let's hear it.
