Official 2016 Globen Galan Live Discussion Thread - G Dibaba goes for 1mile WR, Souleiman goes for 1k WR!

According to the IAAF scoring tables a 4:17.04 mile is equivalent to a 3:57.99 1500. Clearly if Dibaba is in shape and gets good pacemaking, that should be "easy" for her ... as far as world records go.

If she ran 3:55.0 and kept that pace she would end up with a 4:12.13 mile. That seems like more of a stretch to me. The outdoor record is 4:12.56.

Abdalelah Haroun of Qatar will also be going for the 500 WR (1:00.09), in non-distance news. Haroun ran 45.39 indoors last year and 44.27 outdoors.

Interestingly, he also paced through 600 when Souleiman ran 1:43.08 in Barcelona last year.

Yeah, I agree. Out of all the world records she has broken, this one is by far the easiest. However, I honestly wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if she went sub 4:12.56; I don't know why, but I am feeling a 4:11.xx.

A safe guess would be 4:15.

she said she's also going for the 1500i record, which is what, 3:55 from last year? which would mean she needs to split 3:54 and then run 109m, which probably will take her 17sec or so, putting her at 4:11. I'll guess 4:11.8

She was in 3:47 shape for the 3:50 last year and she runs even better indoors. At least 4:09.

So what do we think the ranges are for how we'll look at her performance?

Sub-4:10 = unbelievable, more doping accusations

4:10-4:13 = very good, only light accusations

4:13 or slower = not overly exciting

Dibaba should be going after the 25-year old mile record. She's got another year to wait before she can break it for 26-year olds

500m is an interesting distance. Must be brutal to run. I'm surprised it's not more common, being 1/2 a kilometer. Then again, the 1km is also rarely run.

Spratling actually ran 1:00.06, last year at the Amory. The Stockholm preview article was a bit off (or else I flipped the 6 into a 9 ... wouldn't be the first time).

His outdoor PRs are 45.09 and 20.64 (+2.0). Also ran a 1:17 600 indoors last year.

Haroun might be a pretty big talent, only 18 or 19 still I think, so sub-60 should be very doable for him. The 500 is very, very rarely run it seems. Guess that's why a guy almost no none has heard of has the indoor record.

1 minute exactly would be 200 splits of 24-flat. Seems like a very weak record to me. A good 400 runner (sub-45 PR) with decent strength should be able to go 46.5 - 47 (indoors) and hold on another 100 ... or at least I think so.
