I don't know... I think Sophia Coppola does a great job of creating an authentic emotional pull within her movies. There was a sense of clam depression in both characters - despite their age differences and levels of success - that seemed to lift when they found each other. I don't think the film was supposed to be an opus. If you watch her other films, they are very similar. Most are "a day in the life" types of films that draw on a particular emotion or ambiance. She knows her audience well, and if anyone expected more out of this film, I think it is on them...
